Mississippi River Open School

Our project seeks to develop innovative humanities-based curricula and related educational activities that critically engage with issues at the confluence of race, environment and extraction. We examine the Mississippi River watershed as a site for this exploration, envisioning the entirety of the river as an immersive learning environment, through the establishment of five community-engaged “river hubs” from its Headwaters to the Gulf. This connection with the river will be deepened through a partnership with the River Semester, a 100-day long, domestic study abroad program and canoe journey down the Mississippi which will stop at each of the river hubs for place-based public programming. River hubs will develop models of curricular innovation in the humanities that can be integrated along the river and into the classroom.
